How to measure for replacement windows in your home
To figure out the rough opening width, measure three horizontal lines on each side of the window frame, then divide that number by 2.
Measure how far horizontally across your frame each side jamb is from the top, middle, and bottom. Do this for each side.
Circle the smallest figure in the three.
This is your rough opening width, which is the main thing to look at when you buy a replacement window.
Always list the width of a window first, then the height.
Step 2. Take three vertical measurements of the window frame to figure out the rough height of the window.
It's important to measure the distance across your frame from top to bottom on the left, middle, and right sides of the window. This is the distance from the top of the frame to the bottom.

To Find the Width:
It's important to measure between the jambs at three points: the top, middle, and bottom of the window. When you measure your old window opening, don't take it from the trim strips or parting beads. Instead, measure from the surface of the jambs. It's best to order the window with the smallest of these three sizes.
To Find Out the Height:
Measure from the sill of your window (the surface that is closest to the inside of the window) to the top of the window opening. When you measure the window, you should take three measurements. One should be on the left side, one on top, and one on the bottom of the window. In this case, you want to order your window by looking at this list of three heights:
To Find Out the Depth:
Pulleys and parting strips won't be there when you measure for depth dimensions when you're replacing your windows. 3 1/4 inches must be left between the inside window trim and the outside blind stop strip. When you buy a new window, you need this much space to fit the new one in.
